The Lorrain Museum invites visitors to discover the rich history of Lorraine from prehistoric times, the history of the Court of the Dukes including the famous Stanislas Leszczynski as well as numerous artists. The Museum also includes the Museum of Popular Lorraine Arts and Traditions.
The Nancy Museum of Fine Arts was created in 1973. It is one of the oldest museums in France. It is located on the west side of Place Stanislas in Nancy, housed in one of the four large pavilions that surround the sqaure, created in 1755.
The different museum wings and buildings contain European art from the 15th through to the 20th century.
The royal sqaue was built between 1751 and 1755 in honour of the king of France by Stanislas Leszczynski. It was restored in 2004-2005 on the occasion of its 250th anniversary, giving rise to numerous festivities : "Nancy, the age of enlightenment".
The "Place de la Carrière" appeared in the middle of the 16th century at the time when the medieval town fortifications were moved back. Its name "Carrière" comes from its use for jousts, tournaments and other equestrian games.
Jean Daum chose to abandon ordinary glass for hand-blown art glass. His sons were the reason this celebrated factory become renowned. They created the well-known vitreous pastes for which they became famous. Even though the Museum of Fine Arts exhibits certain superb items amongst its permanent collections, today's "Cristallerie Daum" creates avant-garde sculpture from its crystal.
